Garrett Anthony Rice – “Take Me Down to Where Our Love Plays”

Garrett Anthony Rice returns with his new single “Take Me Down To Where Our Love Plays,” which comes on the heels of his upcoming double album Equinox. On the surface, the song offers the same kind of appeal and familiarity that one finds with a traditional ballad, but there’s something more complicated lying beneath. Rather than openly extolling love, Rice examines the uneasy pull between comfort and temptation.

Rice is notoriously difficult to pin down as a songwriter, and this song is no exception. It unfolds with patience, its wide-ranging instrumentation evoking the meditative feel of early Britpop and melodic rock while resisting predictability. Midway through, a slight shift into a minor key makes a subtle yet profound change in tone.
